Myspace, Facebook

I had a Myspace page for years but never used it for anything. Mostly had it to get in touch with some people who never return phone messages.

Now I am on Facebook. Everybody seems to be on there. But really use it too.

But the weird thing is that I been getting all these messages lately on Myspace. From women...

No not THOSE type of messages. Anyone who has used Myspace knows what I mean. Spam. Pages which are just links to porn sites.

No not that but real messages from women I don't know who just want to chat.

This one girl is from Mexico. She is an artist. Seems very cool. Obviously we can't have a real relationship. Which I made clear to her. But we have similar interests. But I don't get yet why of all the people on Myspace she picked me...

....I am not that good looking.... ( At least I don't see myself that way!!!)

Then I also got messages from a girl who is very close to me. About 30 minutes away. Seems nice to too. Of course being that close leads to some possibilities...

Its just very strange to me that at the point I thought I was abandoning Myspace I am now using it more than
ever! I did change my picture....maybe that did the trick!!!!! LOL!

On Facebook - How selective are you on excepting friends? My best friend from High School thinks I should add all these people we went to school with. People I never really knew. I think that is stupid! Just a symbolic thing. I never liked High School and I am not going to pretend I did now. I have no bad blood with anyone, in fact I barely remember most of those people now. So whats the point?

I'm not on either anymore, I'm on tagged now, I found facebook way to intrusive and my space just boring. I didn't go on tagged to meet anyone but low and behold met the man of my dreams on there, we are now a permanent and long term item. Just be careful and use your common sense. This is how it went with us, he asked me to add him, I checked out his page, there was no offensive material, a good range of friends who he'd obviously chosen because they were of a similar age and had similar interests. So I added him, after a while we chatted on msn, just about general stuff, he never flirted or made suggestive comments or anything like that at all, we both have children living with us and had a lot of common interests which we chatted about, he then offered to come and help me move house, i didn't end up moving but because he was going to be local that weekend I aked him if he wanted to pop in at dinner time and say hi. He did and we ended up sitting out on the porch having a nice chat and a few drinks. Then... my ex husband rang at about 11.30 for some stupid reason, realised i had company and that the company was male and went troppo!! Said guest came to see if I was ok (which I wasn't) and put his arm around me... rest is history!!!!

Can I add though, I was foolish of me to invite him to my house having not met him. I didn't think of that at the time, but we had a quite well established online friendship for a few months and it just didn't occur to me. A better option would have been to meet him somewhere else. It turned out just fine for me but it could have easily not been. You have to be very careful. And by the way, he's not really a looker either and he smokes, but that's is not important, he's the nicest person I have every met.

I don't belong to any of those websites like myspace or FaceBook. However, what I usually do on the forums is just keep the internet business on the computer, and the personal business in real life, and try to never mix the two. That usually reduces stress for me.

However, a real life event happened to me that was similar to your computer event, Avilos. I had been attending a church for a long time, and had generally felt ignored or at least unappreciated in the job that I did. Then, as I was about to quit (and I gave no indication that I was going to quit), people began to come up and treat me very nicely and be friendly towards me. Perhaps there is some unexplained psychic connection wavelength energy that draws people in. Perhaps a bit far out, but it's as good an explanation as any at the moment, eh?

This is the bit that got me, you lose contact with people over the years and then they find you on facebook, but if you were really good friends with them you would never have lost contact in the first place. I've only made contact with one friend who I'd lost contact with that I really wanted to gain contact with again. But the rest, who cares really!!

Great point Bexter.

My parents are the non computer version of that. They will run into people in the store they have not seen in years. Then talk to them for an hour.... literally. But yet make no effort to exchange contact info.

So they are really not that close to these people. But feels a need to tell them their whole life story! Strange!

Facebook can be nice though. I have some former coworkers as friends. When I run into them in person we are friendly more than we would otherwise be.

Well, there are a few people from school, Uni I would like to get back in touch with. Because it happened to me that life just kept me too busy to make sure I still have enveryones current phone number (that was before mobile phones and emails.. although they started being popular during my first uni session) and address. And then it was more of a step to call someone than to email them these days.

I think it depends what you use facebook for.

If you want to keep up to date on everyone you ever knew, why not. I just use it to stay in touch with the people I really want to be able to contact whenever I want, and to give them the option. And it's nice to get little updates on them every once in a while.

The funny thing to me is people who chronicle their every daily movement. My brother does this a bit!

Once I typed as a joke "Tom is looking at his compute monitor RIGHT NOW! looking at Facebook" Because when I look at Facebook...that is all I am REALLY doing.

Of course my brother has an IPhone and updates his Facebook while he is out so it is literally true sometimes.

Most of the time, no. But there are times when it would be handy--when I go to the convention, for instance. But it's not looking like I'm going to get my stuff together to get one beforehand.

I only use the cell phone when I NEED it, and not any other time. If I could wait until I get home to make a telephone call, then I always wait. The one that I have is mostly for emergencies, not really for pleasure.

I don't usually want just everyone to have my home phone number, if people want to reach me and I don't answer they can send me an sms or a voice mail and if I don't want to be disturbed I just turn the thing off

No annoying ringing of the home phone. (although I guess you could set your answering machine to kick in right away. )
This way I can keep my private life and my uni/work life separate.

I also often need to contact people when I'm not home and usually access emails too.. so a smartphone is definitely on my 'to-buy' list

... eventually.

Oh, I disagree with that. I just got on Facebook last month, and I've connected with friends from high school. Many of them moved around after we graduated (college, grad school, etc.) and had various addresses and telephone numbers. None of them still live in our hometown, and, like me, neither do their parents. Some, like me, only go by their married, not maiden, names. I wouldn't know how to get hold of them any other way. Almost all of them, like me, are just coming out of that "so overwhelmed with kids that we have no time to socialize with anybody, ever" phase of our lives. We were good friends then, and we still have a lot in common now. I'm just grateful that there is a way to re-establish contact without having to wait for my next high school reunion.

I don't Friend everyone who asks, and I don't accept request that require access to my contacts. I do think that much of the stuff I see posted is TMI.

As far as I understand it - there was a proposed change to the Terms and Conditions which would have amounted to this, but there was such an outcry they have reverted to the old T&C.

When my son was doing ICT 'A' level at school, he created a mini shareware photo manipulation program. He wrote out a long set of T&C for it, borrowing some of the early bits from a proper program so that they looked 'legitimate'.
The program, with its T&C was distributed to something like 30 students and a half dozen staff. All but two fell for it and clicked on the 'I agree' button.

Just goes to show - you really should read Terms before you agree to anything!

Pretty clever on his part. But, the teacher is right, he did bring to attention a very important point. I guess all the rest of the students will be more careful before they sign up to something, written, electronic, or otherwise.
