That sounds super awesome! But make sure to put in that blue laser pointer that someone here suggested. That was when Al was scanning the church. When will they be ready because I need one. And if you don't believe they will sell, post one on eBay and see how many bids you get.

Maybe it's a sign that you shouldn't part with it :)

Yeah,
Maybe it is a sign that you should not part with it. But I think it's this economic slump that you did not get any bids. Also I was not aware that one was available for auction on eBay. I buy a lot of junk [treasure] on eBay and never came across one.

Speaking of hanklinks, does anyone know if the first season handlink will ever be available?

ha ha well, id put in a super bright laser pointer if somebody request's one with that. Id have to get me a Blue Laster pointer and take it apart so i can fit it in but shouldnt be a problem.

wow man, i wished i had money right now, it looks really awsum

That looks really good but $350? Wow, that's a lotta dosh! What's in it? I just see some pieces of acrylic stuck together.

When I was a kid I got a "Lights out" toy for Xmas and used to pretend it was a handlink...

I could probably acquire pieces of acrylic in different colors, but how to cut it and glue it? Cutting it, unless you buff it, you get rough edges. Glueing it with cyanocrylate (crazy glue) can easily turn the clear plastic cloudy where it dissolves/weakens the plastic.

Plus these Handlinks have full electronics of blinking lights and a sound module the original never had (originally, the sound effects were added in post-production).

I'm guessing after spending 8 hours making one, you would want to charge $350 too. :)

Maybe we make a condition of NeuroMason advertising these handlinks here that he tells us the secret of how he makes them. ;) So talk!!! ;) ;)

Are they not just made from acrylic? Kinda looks like it in the pic. I don't doubt it takes a helluva long time to make them but I was just kinda shocked at first by the price. I'm new here and I supposed this is kinda the first thing of its kind that I've ever seen. I've not seen homemade props before. I suppose they're sort of priceless really because they're not available.

I think it's great though that people are able to make these kinda things :D
I've not watched Quantum Leap in years and only just started back watching some of the episodes. I always wanted a handlink

Please re-read my post. ;)

Getting Acrylic in all those colors is not easy I think.

Then there's cutting it. When you cut plastic, it tends to crack.

Then there's glueing it. When you glue plastic, it tends to cloud and crack even more.

And then there's the circuit board and lights (small bright LEDs are not cheap), and this has a sound module that can play high res sounds from the show.

I'm really not trying to advertise for the show, but if you have shortcuts, advice, or suggestions for any of the stumbling blocks I've posted above, please let me know. I have a close friend at a plastics company and he's told me he cannot source me the acrylic pieces without it costing me thousands of dollars, and he said I would not be able to cut and bond the pieces without special tools.

Your right... It does take a while to make one of these... its not like simply putting together a model car out of the box... lol.. imagine if you had to first MAKE all the pieces to that model car and THEN figure out how to put them all together.. you know, ive done these many times now.. and ive gotten very good at it im my opinion.. but if i were to have a modo to go by for these it would go something like "Weve Been to the Moon and even Created a space station and traveled there many times... but nobody said it was easy" ;) The handlink above in the pics was that handlink just after i had glued the acrylic together... the lights and sound hadnt been add yet. SInce then ive add over 100 3mm L.E.D lights that blink like the show and have add a potentiometer and button that allows the lights to be controlled to flash at different speeds. Also, i have add the sound effect button and speaker inside as well as the blue button on the side of the handlink that turns it off and on. The 350.00 price tag on this one expired as i was only selling it because i needed the money at the time... since then somebody has already bought it for $700.00. But that was with me adding extra's to it like another 50 L.E.D'S and polishing it up really good. When it comes to the money, really your mostly paying for the time it takes to build one and MORE for the time it has taken to "Get it right" and for me to sit and figure out over the years how to do this... ;)

$700/€470 ? Wow! Have you got a picture or video of that one?

Interesting that you say you're paying for the time. I'd say if someone wanted to manufacture these and contacted a factory about a run of them you could probably then sell them for about whatever the average price of a similar mass produced item.

Tooling up a factory to build these would probably cost $100,000.

I do wish NeuroMason would share a bit more about the source for the acrylic parts, what type of adhesive is used, what cutting and polishing tools are used, etc. but I can't force you. ;) I think the prohibitive number of hours involved means even if we knew everything there is to know, we'd still go to you (if we had the money).

I think I saw a picture of a handlink someone made with wine gums. I must give that a try some day I'm bored :p

What was the original handlinks in the TV show made of? And has anyone pictures of the Series 1&2 handlinks?

The original handlink was made out of Lucite.

Here are four close up pictures I took of a real Quantum Leap handlink from Deborah Pratt's collection:

And there are lots more photos of the various Handlinks over the years (including replicas) at Al's Place -> Imaging Chamber -> Handlinks:

Thanks for sharing these photos with us!
Man,she even has Al's light up star badge!
Do you have any close ups of that?

I notice the original handlink used a flat type battery similar to a cell phone battery..did it use tiny incandescent bulbs rather than l.e.d.s?

I thought it was a 9 volt battery. Could be wrong.

You can see the battery in this picture here
http://leapback2009.com/photos/v/dis...geViewsIndex=1

It looks different than a 9 volt battery.
Its flatter and wider and you can see the polarity markings on the sides.
I notice there is an open area on the front of the handlink where you can see the wiring too? It looks like perhaps one of the colored blocks fell off.

Al's "star" light up pin is really interesting too!
The star was the symbol of the maker of the exotic car Al was driving in the first episode.
It looks like the star is actually made of glass tubing like the type used in neon signs, but is probably acrylic and backlit.
Does anyone have some photos of it up close?

I notice also, that there was a box to the right of the mug, what prop was in that?

Looking at it again,I can see that it does look like its probably a 9volt.
Its the angle of the photo that threw me off.

It's kind of vague. I looked at the original photo I took at the maximum possible resolution and still could not make out 9V or otherwise. But the divet near the top left suggests a 9V.

The Handlink used on the show used the same acrylic im using to build the handlink.. the only difference is that the "blocks of acrylic with the lights inside" were in fact individual rectangular light blocks that were avaliable from a company out of japan that actually resembled little transparent lego's that had L.E.D lights molded inside of the blocks.. they actually came in little packs..you could buy them with the diode's already inside the block with the acrylic molded all around it.. each block had 2 L.E.D's inside them.. and they were the "blade" kind too...

Sadly that company went out of business and most places that actually carried those light blocks either sold out or figured that nobody wanted them and then just trashed them (go figure).. ive searched EVERYWHERE for those things for the last 10 years and there are none left! ha ha.. but some companies said they could probably make me some but if your complaining about the cost of the handlink being too expensive now then you would flip your lid after adding the cost of having those lights custom made!!!!!!!!! lol..

as of right now the way i make them is as close as your gonna get.... they are practicaly the same except instead of having the L.E.D'S molded into the light i have to use seperate L.E.D lights and actually counter sink holes into the back side of the acrylic blocks and then hand set them each into the blocks...as for the battery its just an older cell battery like what was used in most of the first cordless telephones... today they have the highly evolved smaller cell batteries like i use that take up WAY less room! lol... and do the same thing..

Ok, if anybody wants a handlink im currently taking orders!! ;).. The Base price for one is $250.00 shipped.. (anywhere within the USA). Im also willing to trade for some "Highlander" Stuff.. Like Katana Swords (the good ones like Marto) or maybe if anybody has any or knows somebody that has some of the official Long Coats from the show... If $250.00 sounds like to much for you all then just make me an offer of what you can spend and i'll let you know what i can i can build for the price... maybe if there are enough people wanting them then i can build some pretty good ones and you all can get them cheaper than normal... But we'll see..

Cheers!!

Brad
