Al questioned Max in the Control Room after hearing Max's theory. "Wait a minuite, Al," Sam told him, his eyes bright. "It makes sense. And it solves another problem I've had: trying to keep in contact with the present when I'm in the past." Al looked at him with curiosity, waiting for him to explain. "We scan the brainwaves of two people and put them together to make a new brainwave which would give Alpha a personality. And if we scan the neurons and mesons of the optic and audic nerves of these two people, it would create a neurological link between the two!" Both Sam and Max looked excited. Al looked confused. "Could you say that in English please?" he requested, Sam smiled. "If we do certain neurological scans, we can have someone contact me in the past as a hologram that I can see and hear and vice versa." "But will the Committee allow you?" Max asked. "It could be dangerous." "Dangerous?" Al questioned. Sam sighed. "There is a strong possibility that scanning alone won't make the link strong enough. We'd need to take cell samples so that Alpha could maintain a strong link." "Cell samples? What cell samples?" Al asked. "Brain cells, Admiral," Max told him. "Brain cells!" Al returned, astonished. "Sam, are you trying to get yourself into more trouble than you already are in now?" Sam looked at him carefully. "It's the only way to solve this problem. And if we can get this done tonight, we can have Alpha perfected by morning. Give the senators proof of our progress." Max frowned a bit, lost by Sam's words. "Weitzman and Harlow are coming here top inspect the Complex tomorrow," Al explained. He looked at Sam. "That may solve one problem but what about the other?" Sam sighed. "I don't know, Al. Use your best judgement." Al frowned. "If I had used my best judgement, we wouldn't be in this mess right now." He took a breath. "Okay, let's get these scans over with." Sam looked at him with question. "You're not thinking of being the other person, are you?" "Why not?" Al asked. "Besides, I'm Administrative Manager and Chief of Security as well as military observer _and_ your best friend. Who's better qualified for the job? Also, we don't have time to argue. Weitzman and Harlow are going to be here in less than twelve hours, remember?" Sam nodded. "You're right." "Good," Al told him. "I'll get us a night's supply of coffee and some dinner while you set up your equipment." "We'll need Dr. Barton," Sam told him as Al started to leave. "I'll get him," Al assured Sam. "He won't like it though. Psychiatrists never do." Sam smiled in amusement as Al left. He turned to Max. "Let's get the infirmary set up." "We'll need Dr. MacArthyr as well," Max pointed out as they left the Control Room, referring to the Chief of Medicine of the Project. Sam nodded in assent as he and Max entered the elevator and rode up to the third floor of the Quantum Leap Complex. -------------------------------------------------- Part 14 next week. Kat Freymuth
