Detailed Synopsis: Continuing the usual eye-roll Leap-in sequence, Ben arrives as Daniel Park, brother to Sonny and son to Jin. Of Korean decent, Ben is assisting his father and brother in running a shoe store owned by Jin. A customer, Luisa Rojas, asks him to make sure the L.A. Gear shoes she is trying on are not knock-offs. She asks why the price has gone up so much. Jin answers that it's because they've lost so much business to Foot Locker. Jin offers to set them aside for her until she returns later with the full payment. Ben picks up a pair of Air Jordan shoes and comments to himself that he always wanted a pair but his Mom couldn't afford them. A young black man, Dwain, enters the store. Jin tells Ben the troublemaker is back and to keep an eye on him so he doesn't steal anything. Dwain tells Ben that Sonny, Daniel's brother, has set aside a pair of Jordan Seven's for him. Ben goes to Sonny to verify. In the stockroom, Sonny tells Ben not to let their Dad see this. He says Jin doesn't trust anyone who is not Korean and barely trusts Koreans. Sonny hands Ben a shoe box, but it contains a lot of money. Sonny tells Ben to trust him. At Magic's house, he has prepared breakfast for two. A woman comes down the stairs in her robe and asks what he is doing. It is Beth Calavicci! Magic presents her with a pair of earrings and says "Happy first date anniversary. He says they are going to celebrate tonight at her favorite restaurant, but made a later reservation in case he gets held up at Quantum Leap. Beth is concerned because she thought his position at the Project was temporary. Magic says that since Addison has stepped away from being Ben's hologram, he needs to be there for Ben. Beth asks if Ian or Jenn or Tom could do it. Magic explains that Tom is the D.O.D. liaison but the team is still his own responsibility. Beth asks Magic, after what he went through last year, is he sure this is wise? Magic smiles and says he will be fine. Back at Park's Shoe Shack, Jin is threatening to call the police if Dwain doesn't leave the store. He says Dwain never buys anything. Dwain says he already paid for the shoes and Jin demands a receipt. Sonny comes running with a receipt. Jin still tells Dwain the next time he sees the boy in his store, he will call the police for real. At PQL, Magic prepares to be Ben's hologram. Jenn is worried Magic may get rattled. Magic says he is a former Navy Seal... he doesn't get rattled. Ian asks Addison if she is sure she doesn't want to go back in and talk to Ben one last time. She says she won't ignore Ben's wishes. She tells the team she is available by cell if anyone needs her. Ziggy has finally located Ben and Ian asks Magic, "Are you ready to trip the light Quantastic?" Magic replies, "As I'll ever be." The Imaging Chamber door slides open from left to right, and Magic walks through. Magic arrives and asks Ben if he happens to have a black leather oxford men's 14. Ben instantly knows it's Magic. Admiral Williams tells Ben that this is a far cry from Hollywood in Koreatown. As they watch on TV, the verdict of 'not guilty' for the four police officers during the court case about the beating of Rodney King is read. Magic and Ben realize this is April 29, 1992, the day the L.A. riots began. Ben remembers the day it happened and how angry people were over the verdict and how unfair it was to the black community. Ben questions Magic that he is not there to change all that. Magic checks the handlink and says, "No, in the original history, Park's Shoe Shack was ransacked. Jin tried to protect his store and was killed. Magic says he will check in with Ian and Jenn to help Ben get ahead of the situation. He fades out. Ben and his family talk about the Rodney King verdict and Ben suggests they close early to be away from the area since he knows what is about to happen. Jin refuses since Luisa said she'd be back for the shoes. Ben and Sonny start cleaning up. They talk about their Dad fighting a losing battle with the small shoe shop up against the bigger companies moving in. Sonny asks Ben when he is planning on telling their Dad about going to Marine boot camp. Before they can address it further, police sirens begin and they move back inside the store. Luisa arrives for the shoes and Ben suggests they ride with her to leave immediately. Jin says the radio said to shelter in place. Ben offers to walk Luisa to her car. At PQL, the team is trying to find the cause of Jin's death. Ian speaks about people at the time having a lot of misinformation, fear and rage. Magic asks them to keep at it. Jenn asks if anyone else is still reeling from the Ben and Addison breakup. Magic asks them to stay focused. Ian finds a report that Jin tied from blunt force trauma right in front of the store. Things are getting bad in Koreatown. Koreans are on rooftops with guns. People are blowing up cars and smashing windows. Looting is going on everywhere. Luisa and Ben find her car burned on the street. Magic arrives and tells them to get back to the store. He says Ben is not just there to save Jin. Ben demands that they leave the store. But Magic says it's too late, there is no way out now. He advises that the National Guard won't arrive until the next morning. Jin wants to go on roof to protect store with a rifle. Sonny takes the rifle and heads up to the roof. Ben and Luisa begin removing stock from the windows. Magic gets a notification from HQ and needs to check it out. When Magic exists the Imaging Chamber, he finds Beth at HQ who says he has forgotten his lunch. Magic says he doesn't recall packing a lunch and she insists she accompany her to his office. Magic becomes disturbed and snaps at Ian giving the a direct order to have Ziggy run a series of exit strategies to get Ben and his family out of town. In Magic's office, he comments to Beth that he thought she'd never set foot at Quantum Leap again. She says after breakfast, she was cleaning up and found an empty bottle of blended scotch whisky. Magic swears he found it in the pantry and poured it out. He says he has not started drinking again. We discover that Magic became an alcoholic when they lost Ben. She says she saw the toll it took on him when the Project was shut down just like it did on Al, when he lost Sam. Beth says she will not watch that happen again. Magic swears he won't let that happen. Ben and Jin watch the events of the riot unfolding on television as they prepare for the worst. Magic arrives again, and says Ziggy doesn't have an exit strategy where Jin doesn't end up dead. Dwain begins to beat on the door from outside and Sonny begs Jin to let him in, but the father refuses. Dwain runs off as Magic tells Ben that if the cops catch him, there is a 100% chance he won't survive. Ziggy also says there is an 84% chance that Jin will be safe for a couple of hours if Ben leaves to find Dwain. Sonny tells Jin that he should have let Dwain inside. Jin says he is a no-good criminal. Luisa asks if Jin believes that because he's black. Sonny says Dwain is his business partner. Ben realizes that is what the money in the shoe box was for. Sonny tells them that he and Dwain are working on a custom shoe line because mom and pop places like Jins' are going to go under. Jin is upset because he built the shoe store for Sonny and his brother after coming to the United States with nothing 20 years ago. Sonny says he is not turning his back on the family; he's looking to the future for all of them. Jin tells Sonny that if he doesn't want to work the store at least Daniel will. Sonny tells Jin to ask Ben where he will be three months from now. Ben tells Jin that Daniel has enlisted in the Marines, but they have to go save Dwain and will be back soon. Ben and Sonny run down the streets in alleyways to find Dwain. Ben agrees that the shoe idea is a good idea. He also advises Sonny that Jin just wants to take care of his family and is now faced with losing them all to other enterprises and the military. Magic has found Dwain and tells Ben where to find him. Dwain gets cornered in an alley with no exit and Ben and Sonny help him hide. The police go by and they take Dwain back to the store. Sonny tells them to go ahead because he is going to steal all the supplies he can find. Magic gets a look on his face and tells Ben he can't do this, and fades out. Magic goes to his office and Ian and Jenn comment that the last time they saw him like this, he was drinking. Jenn tells Magic that whatever is triggering him - they can talk about it or stand there in silence. Magic talks to her about the Long Hot Summer, the race riots of 1967. Magic says he was injured in one of the riots. He says four cops stopped him and his buddies and pulled them from the car and put their boots on their necks and beat them up with batons, leaving them on the street like trash. He says seeing the fear in Dwain's face took him back to that moment. Jenn holds his hand and tells him that he can take a break from the Leap. Magic says he intends to keep his promise to Ben to keep them safe. Jin tells Luisa and Ben that he never should have let his boys leave as they wait for Sonny to return. He says Dwain is not welcome in his store and Ben snaps back saying that if Jin keeps pushing everyone he loves away, Jin will destroy their family. Ben speaks to Jin in Korean, which surprises the father because he didn't know his son knew Korean. Just then, looters break into the store! They run into the stock room and try to lock themselves in. Dwain, Jin, Ben and Luisa hold the door and the looters move on. The store has been ransacked and emptied of all inventory. Jin is disparaged and they start cleaning up. Magic returns and he and Ben promise that if they need anyone to talk to, they are there for each other. Magic tells Ben that he in an alcoholic. He tells Ben that the team knows and it started when the Project was shut down. He tells Ben that Beth got him out of his darkness and that it's been 353 days since his last drink, but every day since has been a battle. Ben tells Magic, "You didn’t lose me Magic. I made a choice to leap and the consequences of that are my burden to bear not yours. And as for what you’re living with – you’re an admiral and a decorative seal – if there’s a battle to be fought – I know you will win it.” Ian finds Addison working out in the Project gym. They tell Addison that they are worried about Magic. Ian tells her that they think it's their own fault. “Everything that’s happened to Ben – to Magic – it all happened because my future self - dropped this nuclear bomb that’s left this team in an emotional wasteland – we’re slowly being poisoned by the radioactive fall out.” Addison says they have to move past what was, and focus on what's next: figuring out a way to get Ben home. Jenn calls Ian and says to get back up to HQ, Ziggy is freaking out! Ian and Addison return to HQ quickly and find the screen going haywire and everything flashing. Ian says that when Ben changed history by bringing Dwain back to the store, everything changed. Ziggy says now someone else is going to die. Dwain tries to comfort Jin by saying at least they survived, they just lost stuff. Jin becomes angry yelling at Dwain that he has lost everything. Dwain says at least he still has his boys. Jin calls him a punk kid who doesn't know anything. Dwain tells Jin he always has a target on his back with people thinking he's a thief or thug. He is about to graduate top five in his class, has scholarship offers from three ivy league schools, but all Jin sees is a poor angry black kid. Jin picks up his rifle and points it at Dwain! Ben steps in and says they have more in common than they know. Jin hears someone entering the store and yells, "They are coming back!" He fires at the figure appearing in the doorway, but it's Sonny, returning with supplies. Sonny is shot. Jin cries, holding his son exclaiming, "What have I done?!" Luisa has dealt with gunshot wounds before and says they need to get to a hospital. Magic says there is a 93% chance Dwain will die if he doesn't get medical attention. They take him to an ambulance up the block and find the keys in it. Police see Dwain with them and order him on the ground, as they think he is stealing the ambulance. Dwain says he is just trying to save his friend. Jin steps between the police and Dwain and tells them that Dwain has done nothing wrong, so leave him alone! He begs them to go and do their job and let him save their son. The police leave on another call. Dwain thanks Jin. Jin tells him that he can thank him by driving as fast as he can to save Sonny. On the way to the hospital, Magic advises that Sonny survives and that he and Dwain go on to build a custom shoe empire. Jin uses the store insurance money to become the first investor. As for Daniel, after the Marines, he goes on to business school and becomes the company's first CFO. Ben tells Jin that Sonny is going to be okay, and as he begins to Leap, he looks back and Magic and says, "We all are." Exiting the Imaging Chamber, the team checks on Magic. He says he will be okay and makes a phone call to Beth asking her to take a rain check on dinner that night and instead accompany him to an AA meeting. He says he can really use her support." Ben Leaps in and finds himself faced with a man named Lawrence, who is bleeding. He says someone followed him and thought he had the formula. Ben calls out for help. Lawrence calls him Henry, and says that "It's real. You have to find it before they can." As he appears to die in Ben's arms, Ben yells out his name as we fade to black. |

Personal
Review by Brian Greene: This Leap is quite enjoyable, although I would have loved it to be more centered around the historic events instead of using them mainly as a backdrop for the central storylines. Seeing some actual archival footage would have been warranted. It is similar to the original series episode "Black On White On Fire." Using Magic as the hologram was a nice change, although I prefer Ian or Jenn. Magic was well-suited for this episode. Hearing Magic's recount of his own experiences with riots and the challenges of being a black kid in the past was powerful. I thought the storyline about Magic being an alcoholic was a bit rushed. It would have been nice to see that eased into over a couple of episodes. I did like that he is seeing Beth - knowing she is not alone in the world and with a good man is a nice twist. Overall a good episode, and the preview for the next Leap is intriguing! |

Project
Trivia: Ziggy goes wild at one point when history changes – all of the screens in PQL are flashing and data is streaming across them. Ziggy also predicts that someone will have to die. Magic takes over as the hologram for Ben. Magic
wears a men's size 14 shoe. Magic has been in a relationship with Beth Calavicci for over a year. They are celebrating their first date anniversary and will be celebrating it at Emilio’s. Magic was on leave in Detroit in 1967 when he and his friend were pulled over and the police assumed that they had stolen the car. They pulled them out of the car and beat them with their batons and held them down with their boots on their necks. Magic also tells Ben that he’s an alcoholic. It happened when they lost Ben. Magic wears black slacks, tennis shoes, a blue shirt and a leather black jacket throughout the episode. Tom is the Department Of Defense Liaison. |
||
Ben Trivia: Ben remembers when Air Jordan shoes came out. He always wanted a pair, but his Mom couldn't afford them. Ben speaks Korean fluently. Ben tells Luisa that he spent some time in a hospital once. This probably refers to the episode "Paging Dr. Song." |
||
Addison Trivia: Addison is very accepting of stepping down from being the Observer and hands it all over to Magic. |
||
Ian's
Outfits Worn in
the Episode: They wore a black and white squiggly lined collared shirt with no sleeves that showed off their tattoos. |
||
Kiss With History: The Los Angeles Riots in April 1992 resulted in the beating of Rodney King, a victim of police brutality. In Central Los Angeles, there was much destruction in many neighborhoods, including Koreatown. On the TV in the Park Shoe Shack – a breaking story happened April 29, 1992: Four police officers were acquitted of beating Rodney King which started the LA Riots. Rodney King was beaten fifty-six times on camera. The TV also gives another kiss with history when it announces that Reginal Denny was pulled from his vehicle and beaten. A Long Hot Summer – Summer of 1967 – Race Riots. |
||
Miscellaneous
Trivia: From wikipedia: The largest concentration of Korean businesses and community services in the San Francisco Bay Area is centered on Oakland's Telegraph Avenue between 20th and 35th Streets between Downtown Oakland and the Temescal district. Roughly 150 Korean-owned businesses are located in the neighborhood, including a shopping center and Korean American community centers. This segment of Telegraph Avenue is lined with bright banners proclaiming the district as "Koreatown-Northgate" with the slogan "Oakland's got Seoul" and accompanied by an annual cultural festival. Officially named "Koreatown-Northgate", the area was characterized by urban decay before Korean Americans began opening businesses and reviving the area in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Before 1991, the area was characterized by homelessness and crime and was known as the Northgate district. The aftermath of the Los Angeles Riots of 1992 also saw a large number of Koreans from Southern California moving to the Bay Area and opening businesses and buying property in the district on a large scale. There has been criticism from the non-Korean residents about the city officially naming the district Koreatown, mostly from the African American population who form the majority in the area. Despite Korean Americans owning much of the property in the neighborhood, the largest group of residents still remains African American. Tensions remain between African Americans and Koreans in the neighborhood, which has witnessed declines in both populations. Despite some Koreans continuing to move into the neighborhood, the majority of the Bay Area's Korean population is concentrated in the suburbs surrounding Oakland and in the South Bay. |

From
the Quantum Leap Writers Room: Ernie Hudson is from Michigan, so we decided that Magic would be in Detroit in 1967. What we DIDN’T know at the time of writing the episode was that Ernie was in Detroit as well during the Long Hot Summer of 1967. Talk about a coincidence! The three extras on the rooftop are played by legendary stunt actors Simon Rhee, Phillip Rhee and Jeff Imada! Raymond and CS Lee have such great on-screen chemistry as father and son, don't you think? That's because they’re actually friends and golfing buddies in real life! Analisa Velez won us over in her audition because of the wry sense of humor she brought to the role. We can't get enough of her! The street scenes in episode 5 were shot on the same street as the Ninja Warrior course!! Season 2 episode 5 was shot entirely on the backlot! |

What?
Magic
is called back to HQ at possibly the worst time to face Beth over his
drinking issues. During the height of a top secret military mission,
this seems unlikely to have been allowed. Even if Beth has clearance,
she should have waited until the mission was complete. The key was just left in the ignition of the ambulance. Really? That’s convenient. Dwain calls Jin "Mr. Parker" and not Park. |
