There were episodes that were either partially shot or a script was written but never made it to television? Ideas include Sam leaping into a baby, a dog (chimpanzee instead), and a "kiss with history" with Bartle and Jaymes. Sam either accidently or intentionally showed them how they could combine fruit with wine to make wine cooler. There was a Magnum P.I. crossover but the word was that Tom Selleck didn't want to do it. This was supposed to be the Fifth Season opener. Instead, they had to come back from hiatus to shoot the intro to "Lee Harvey Oswald" at the last minute. This may be the reason why we saw two different actresses play Marina Oswald and a completely different setting with the famous Oswald holding the rifle picture. The Magnum P.I. intro would show Sam do that Thomas Magnum wink. There was also plans for a cartoon leap. If NBC had renewed Quantum Leap for a sixth season, plans were for Sam to leap in as Richard Nixon.
"The Leap Between The States" was supposed to be the second to last episode and not "Memphis Melody". NBC made a swap change in order for "The Leap Between The States" air date to fall near the 30th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Birmingham protests I believe.
Why did Donald P. Bellisario break the rule of no celebrity leapings in the Fifth Season? I believe that NBC insisted on it. Another change in the Fifth Season was that Sam really started to suffer from his leaps as he sometimes drifts into the mind of the leapee such as in "Lee Harvey Oswald", "Trilogy- Part II", "Trilogy- Part III", "Dr. Ruth" and "Return (Return Of The Evil Leaper)". Of course, the Fifth Season wasn't the first season ever to have Sam experience the minds of the leapees. The first time was in Season Three in the episode "8½ Months" where Sam experiences the pain of childbirth. In the Season Four opener "The Leap Back", Sam And Al simoleaped and retained some of each other's thoughts.Disclaimer: This web site is not endorsed nor supported by Universal Studios nor Belisarius Productions but a fan produced web page intended for the enjoyment of QUANTUM LEAP fans.
