Somehow, I have contacted a virus a this flipping computer... it's scanning now... and is still picking up files from a worm.

So, here's the deal...

I'm trying to rid my computer of it.

If you got an email from me... which I hope that you have not... then... scan your computer.

It seems that I have the newest fan-dangle out there.

It replicated zip files all through my system... and it's bad...

So... *sigh*... that means that if I can't remove this crappy thing from my computer that... we get to start all over again.

AGAIN.

AIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH!

So, wish me luck.

Thanks

MJ

I've got it

MJ, I was wondering where this came from. I keep getting emails with attachments. I keep getting emails saying "delivery failed" on messages I never sent to addresses I've never used. I delete them immediately, but they keep coming and coming. You probably have my email address memorized, so could you maybe take my name off your contact list until you're clean again?

I can't afford to deal with an email virus right now.

Thanks, and I'll talk to you soon.

In Peace,
Shane

This crappy thing....

Interesting enough... I believe that I received it from a service with adelphia.net at the end of it....

Shane, I'm sorry...

Just wondering how long this was going on and why you didn't contact me sooner. My computer seemed to be okay about 2 days ago... and now bam.

sucks...this really sucks.

Sorry man... I'll fix.... one way or another.

Re: This crappy thing....

Yeh, I got a load of those, MJ, with the added message that Matt Butcher wanted me to confirm I wasn't spamming him.
I have never heard of him.
Fortunately, my mac refused to open any of the attachments, (one of which told me I was a bad writer :( )and has ignored the virus.
Please, people, when you get to needing to replace your outdated equipment, consider a mac! There are only 500 known mac viruses, as opposed to 30,000 pc ones. In real terms, they are no more expensive and generally have better warranties and support.

Advert over (Apple where's my commission?)

...

MJ, I didn't mean to sound like I was getting onto you.

I only started getting these emails last night. I didn't open any attachments, so it's not a big deal. I scanned and found one tiny java virus. It has been deleted and now my machine is clean.

I hope you can get yours back on track. In the meantime, I'll try and catch you on MSN later tonight.

In Peace,
Shane

Re: ...

Hmmm, I've been getting those emails with attachments for over a week now, so I don't think it's anything you have sent MJ.

Tis only on one specific email account that I get them and I know I haven't sent any emails out from that address as I only use it for incoming emails from my website.

The only emails I open with attachments are those from people I know and I urge everyone to do the same, there are some nasty people out there who are determined to reek havoc over the net. And I think that they may have gotten my email address from my site even though it's encripted.

*sigh*

All I know is that I'm tired of this freaking computer and all it's quirks.

It seems that this may not work and I may have to get rid of the whole flipping thing.

*explicative removed*

I've had enough.

Things aren't opening like they should.

I've lost the majority of all my files anyway.

Why not all of them? Hmmm?

This is just... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I can't say what I want to.

Shane, I know that you weren't. I was just telling you guys .... and I ... oh hell, nevermind.

And another thing...

I don't know why Al's Place Messageboard won't allow me to enter in correctly. *sigh*

Norton Antivirus has collected about 5,898 infected files on my computer from the lovely MY DOOM virus - worm - replicated piece of crap.

Of course, I'm having a problem of getting rid of all 5,898 files. Of course.

So, I'm working on trying to get the thing taken care of, but when your computer is having a problem just pulling up Norton.... then freezing... and then scanning and blah blah blah...

I've just about had enough of my computer, and I want to toss it out into the pool and let it sit there.

I'm this close ...

No. 1 -- I can't come online and actually tell anyone anything. I can't email either. *sigh* BECAUSE... it did something to my incredimail program so, I had to delete it.

That means that all of my addresses are gone.

No. 2 -- it took pretty much all of my pictures from my computer. :realmad Yea... explicative galore.

No. 3 -- It also took pretty much all of my documents... all the stories that I had saved on my computer and trashed them as well. Another bunch of stuff just gone.

I'm considering that since this is the case, that I just go ahead and erase the whole flipping thing.

If that's the case, then Brian and Aurora are going to have to help me get some stuff back. *sigh* Or... no more QL:TVS or QR or QL Radio Files.

:realmad

Ok. I'm trying not to rant.... but I'm gone for now...

At least...

*sigh*

Re: And another thing...

I have been getting attempts at a virus through email to "made-up accounts" @quantumleap-alsplace.com starting yesterday. I have run norton antivirus all through my system and all files are clean. bartender@, webmaster@, brian@, help@ and sales@quantumleap-alsplace.com have not been targeted so it is just at random.

Checked with the web host and all files are clean so it's not coming from the website or me for sure.

Could be just a random wave coming through.

Tips to remember: Always use antivirus software to open email. Never open an email with an attachment unless you are expecting it and it's from someone you know. Free screensaver emails are almost always viruses.

I check email through outlook express which works nicely with norton antivirus to eliminate virus threats.

Hope the rest of you guys don't have any problems! Al's Place will NEVER send you an email with an attachment unless you have requested it or are expecting it. All email addresses on the newsletter mailing list are kept private and never given out to anyone.

Re: And another thing...

Helen, you stated the case pretty perfectly... I have never experienced a virus that wiped everything from my computer's memory because I also use a Mac, which is virtually virus-resistant. Not 100%, but it's very hard to corrupt a Mac computer permanently. Any of the places I've worked at also use Macs, and the few viruses we've obtained have been received via e-mail attachments from clients who use (what else?) PCs.

The reason why there are so few Mac viruses compared to PC viruses is because... well... most people use PCs. I've used both Macs and PCs, and personally, I think Macs are much easier to use. It's just that PCs rule the world, unfortunately. Damn #@*#!& Bill Gates.... :realmad

Incidentally, Helen, that e-mail was OBVIOUSLY a phony if it told you that you were a horrible writer! ;)

I hope you can straighten out all your comp problems, MJ. Just remember what I offered... if you need me to back-up files for you, I'll be more than happy to store as much as I can...

Thank you for those few kind words, Dman!

I guess you are right, if everybody switched to Macs - so would the hackers and the virus makers.

Meantime, please, please please pc users - make sure you have backups of your backups!

Re: And another thing...

The thing to remember the most about these emails that LOOK like their coming from someone you might know... a friendly email addy, is that the virus hits the ID of an email addy... and then replicates itself and mass sends it out, with a spoofed email addy.

I've had several people tell me they got virii from me from the "Knightshow.com" domain. But they're all from people that don't have email addy's from me.

As Brian has stated, scan EVERYTHING. Even pictures!! There are some virii that hide embedded within pictures!

Lastly, use an active Virus Scan, such as McAfee or Innoculator. It may be annoying when your favorite popups get blocked, and you have to do something else to see what people are trying to send you... but just think of the ol' adage:

Be Prepared!

Matt

Bedtimes Virus

If you receive an email entitled "Bedtimes" delete it IMMEDIATELY! Do
not open it! Apparently this one is pretty nasty. It will not only
erase everything on your hard drive, but it will also delete anything
on disks within 20 feet of your computer.

It demagnetizes the strips on ALL of your credit cards. It reprograms
your ATM access code, screws up the tracking on your VCR, and uses
subspace field harmonics to scratch any CD's you attempt to play. It
will program your phone auto dial to call only 0898 numbers.

This virus will mix antifreeze into your fish tank.

IT WILL CAUSE YOUR TOILET TO FLUSH WHILE YOU ARE SHOWERING.

It will leave dirty underwear on the coffee table when you are
expecting company. It will replace your shampoo with Nair and your
Nair with Rogaine. If the! "Bedtimes" message opened in a Windows
95/98 environment, it will leave the toilet seat up and leave your
hair dryer plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub.

It will not only remove the forbidden tags from your mattresses and
pillows, it will also refill your skim milk with whole milk.

******* WARN AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN. *******

And if you don't send this to 5000 people in 20 seconds, you'll pass gas
so hard that your right leg will spasm and shoot straight out in
front of you, sending sparks that will ignite the person nearest you.

Send this warning to everyone.

If you are a blonde, this is a joke!!!
