June 13th, 2004 Guestvision By: Georgia Soley
I remember watching the first Quantum Leap like it was yesterday... I was 12 when I saw the first pilot episode of Q L . It was a Sunday afternoon and my dad called to me that there was a good film on telly. I had missed the first 10 minutes or so but it immediately captivated me and I was transfixed on the screen. I was overjoyed when I learnt that the next episode was on next Tuesday at 9pm. It's hard to believe that 12 year have passed since the first episode of this fantastically original sci-fi series, but I still remember so vividly the emotions and excitement it stirred in me! I was always in my room a few minutes before 9pm so excited as Q L was about to start. In the later episodes when the woman narrated the introduction I would imitate her soft voice and even perfected the American accent! For some reason I would have to make sure I didn't miss the date, just incase it was my date of birth. To this day I don't know the significance of this urgency - maybe it would make that episode that bit more special??! So every Tuesday I would watch Q L with fascination and a burning desire to meet someone similar to the character of Sam Beckett - before you rule me out as a complete loon, I was a hopelessly romantic teenager, besides who hasn't lusted after Scott Bakula! I only missed one episode (the one where he was a mother for the second time and Blossoms ex alcoholic brother was in it). I saw it eventually - it only took 12 years! I thought it was great. I find it amazing that Scott can portray all these different personalities and lifestyles so authentically. He was so maternal in this episode, it was extremely endearing. Other episodes that I particularly enjoyed are: the one where he was Elvis (please excuse the fact that I don't remember the names of the episodes) - the vocals in this were mind blowing. The one where he was Marilyn Monroe's bodyguard was also a classic - great idea, the Alia Trilogy and subsequent episodes that included her were fantastic - I somehow felt a sense of comfort knowing Sam had an ally (or Alia as the case may be!). I loved the one where he went home to the future - wow, a few tears were shed on that night I can tell you - and how devastating that he wouldn't remember he was married. That episode was just ....wow! Oh and of course the 2 episodes that involved him going back to the past and seeing his family, and then when he was Magic and saved his brother Tom, in Vietnam. I saw 'The Boogieman' last night - that's another favorite. I was fine up until Al turned in to the Devil and then I was terrified. It was quite disturbing just how how evil Al was! I'd write in my diary after every episode with a summary of what had happened this week and rated it out of 10! Q L really did shape the way I thought as I was growing up. I always dreamed I would be with someone who was as caring and kind as Sam's character and lucky for me I'm with a guy who is! |
