DVDs are helping out with the "New Fans" of Quantum Leap Recent review at amazon.com over the First Season DVD set of "Quantum Leap" are nothing short of astounding... but I found a recurring theme in many of them. "Well done and about time... :) No pun intended!, July 8, 2004
...My seven year old daughter is as anxious about season two as I am. We can't wait! It's a show for the whole family and truly one of the best ever!" Many of the fans, like myself, have expressed how much a family show this was, and how wonderful it is to have our children fall in love with something we loved over 10 years ago. From a guestvision I wrote: http://www.quantumleap-alsplace.com/guestvision/12172002mattsearcy.htm "To me, that is very much the reason Quantum Leap continues to thrill audiences to this day. Whole new generations of fans of the show are in my house now, thanks to my faithful Scifi/USA tapes I made back when Dinosaurs ruled the Earth and scared us hairy apes all the freakin' time! These new fans see the buddy bits, they see the storylines... they see the message that "every life has meaning", they see the shows where God would send this TEAM into the life of a simple boy, or a raped girl... because they are special to Him! These new fans, even as young as nine years old, anxiously await the standard phrase which became so well known in the series... "Oh Boy!" They giggle watching the three-way conversations between Leaper-Observer-and usually some poor sap that has no idea all this confusing stuff is going on. These newbies thrill to see the adversity, the fights, the girly-dresses and Sam's grimaces of "oh no" and "not again". They rib each other as ol' Al once again goes after the ladies with a leer, and yet has even more heart than Dr. Beckett when it comes to the downtrodden."Now with the DVD so well received, let me address the other issue that my kids are always asking me: "Will they make another series about 'Quantum Leap' or what about a TV-movie?" In response, I remember this from another guestvision I wrote, at that time about the whole hubbub about the "retelling" of Battlestar: Galactica: http://www.quantumleap-alsplace.com/guestvision/07242003mattsearcy.htm "The recent DVD sales of "Dune" and "Children of Dune" are huge successes for The Scifi Channel, and has set a serious precedent that basically NEEDED to be set. And I think a lot of us older Battlestar fans will grudgingly admit that the new series has a good chance for success, despite Glen Larson and the original cast and crew's thoughts on this. It's a new time, and yes, it's time for both Galactica and Quantum to shine again. Yes with newer stars. " Now I personally think that a new series with Sam's Daughter Sammi Jo would be terrific... to a point. I'm REALLY hoping Scott Bakula remembers his roots and at least will do guest star segments, and eventually have himself be rescued by Sammi Jo. Admittedly, that's a fan's goal for the show. But what's got me pumped is the kids... those that didn't "grow up" with the show... but have found it in syndication, and now the DVDs. With the upcoming sale, my stepsons are going nuts wondering when we'll have the second season DVDs for Quantum Leap. Forgotten are the five seasons of VHS tapes... with commercials. Now, their eyes light up with the interviews, the original aired intro, and the ability to zoom in, and have fun with it. The science aspects of the show run unchecked... sometimes they try to figure out why Ziggy was first a male and now a female... and other unique parts of the show. I love, as a parent, the family and morality aspects of the show. Even Al's leery attitude is tame in comparison to what other shows are today... and I feel comfortable with letting my kids pop in these DVDs. Of course, I know the stories, so it's easy for the ol' approval part from me. I look forward in anticipation to the future... with the releases of the older shows, and the current movie-in-progress... I think that Quantum Leap will be in our future for a while! Matt |
