TV Guide Synopsis:
Now a government agent, Ben investigates unexplained extraterrestrial activity. After a mysterious incident in New Mexico, two young girls' lives are on the line. Ben meets Hannah Carson, who may be more than she appears.

Broadcast Date:
Wednesday, October 4, 2023  |  8pm on NBC

Leap Date:
1949

Leap Location:
Starlight, New Mexico

Name of Leapee:
Agent Robert Cook

Project Trivia:
Janis Calavicci is now working for the NSA in Hawaii.

Tom Westfall has been in Washington, D.C. during this episode.

The waitress, Hannah, says she studied mathematics and physics. She got a job during the war as a programmer on the first electro mechanical computer. The job went away after the war like it did for most women. Ben gives her the name of a professor, Yates, at Princeton who is about to open up a new physics program to female candidates. Ben tells her to contact him. In promotional materials, the character of Hannah has been announced as a series regular, so we can presume that because Ben changed her path at the end of this episode, we will see her again as part of this butterfly effect.

Ben Trivia:
Ben played chicken with shopping carts in high school.

Ben's memory is coming back strongly. He remembers the entire team at PQL and can even recall obscure events such as a physics program opening to female candidates circa 1949.

Addison Trivia:
None.

Ian's Outfits Worn in the Episode:
Black jacket with blue button-up shirt

Kiss With History:
Ben tells the General to move his base to an abandoned airfield called Area 51, the common name of a highly classified United States Air Force (USAF) facility within the Nevada Test and Training Range. A remote detachment administered by Edwards Air Force Base, the facility is officially called Homey Airport or Groom Lake (after the salt flat next to its airfield). Details of its operations are not made public, but the USAF says that it is an open training range, and it is commonly thought to support the development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems. The USAF and CIA acquired the site in 1955, primarily for flight testing the Lockheed U-2 aircraft. The intense secrecy surrounding the base has made it the frequent subject of conspiracy theories and a central component of unidentified flying object (UFO) folklore. It has never been declared a secret base, but all research and occurrences in Area 51 are Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information. The CIA publicly acknowledged the base's existence on 25 June 2013, following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed in 2005 and declassified documents detailing its history and purpose. Area 51 is located in the southern portion of Nevada, 83 miles north-northwest of Las Vegas. The surrounding area is a popular tourist destination, including the small town of Rachel on the "Extraterrestrial Highway".

Miscellaneous Trivia:
Project Sign was the project before Project Bluebook.

The Bell 47, mentioned by Jenn in the episode, is a single-rotor single-engine light helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter. It was based on the third Bell 30 prototype, which was the company's first helicopter designed by Arthur M. Young. The 47 became the first helicopter certified for civilian use on 8 March 1946. The first civilian delivery was made on 31 December 1946 to Helicopter Air Transport. More than 5,600 Bell 47s were produced, including those under license by Agusta in Italy, Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan, and Westland Aircraft in the United Kingdom. The Bell 47J Ranger is a modified version with a fully enclosed cabin and tail boom.

From the Quantum Leap Writer's Room:
Ray split his jacket jumping over the fence during one of the takes in the big argument scene with Addison!

Drones were used to create the UFOs in tonight's episode!

Production had to be shut down for a day due to weather conditions. If you look closely, you can see rain in the background of the shots with Ben and Addison!

The diner scene was originally set in a lobby bar at the hotel, and Hannah was going to be a bartender.

The brilliant writer of tonight's episode worked for
Dean Georgaris for three years prior to being promoted as a staff writer for Quantum Leap!

While breaking this week's episode, the writers' room engaged in many a heated debate about whether or not aliens were real.

Eliza Taylor as Hannah Carson: Perhaps best known for anchoring the drama THE 100 as 'Clarke Griffin' on The CW for 7 seasons. Since the show's onset, Eliza made waves playing the network's first openly bisexual lead character. In the film space, Eliza starred in the indie thriller THUMPER opposite Pablo Schreiber and Lena Headey, which premiered to rave reviews at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival. Louis Herthum as Sheriff Morgan: After 35 years as a professional actor, Louis Herthum had a breakthrough year in 2017, a year that saw him upped to a series regular for season 2 of HBO's critically acclaimed "Westworld." Herthum made a big impact with his memorable turn on "Westworld," as Peter Abernathy, father to Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and one of the first robots to experience programming glitches in the series first season. Herthum began his acting career in his hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His first "big break" came in 1991 when he joined the cast of the long-running hit CBS series "Murder, She Wrote," starring as Deputy Andy Broom opposite Angela Lansbury for the show's final five seasons. His recurring television roles include his portrayal of Omar in Netflix's "Longmire," and werewolf pack leader JD in season 5 of HBO's supernatural drama "True Blood." His mother, Diane, is the grand-daughter of Herman DeVry founder of the DeVry Institute. William is an only child and named after his maternal grandfather. As a child William was fortunate enough to travel to many places, including Guinea Africa, where he lived for several years. As a young boy he dreamed of becoming a major league baseball player, hopefully for his favorite team the Montreal Expos, but while in college a friend of a friend suggested he attend acting classes (for fun) and by doing so William's dream career changed. William's best known for his roles as Joshua Doors on Earth Final Conflict, Brent Kallus on Beggars and Choosers, Aldwin on StarGate SG-1, and most recently Michael Cambias on All My Children. William currently resides in Vancouver, Canada where most of his work in the Science Fiction genre has been filmed. Guests Who Appeared in Other Quantum Leap Episodes:
None.

Characters who appeared (or were mentioned) in Classic Series episodes:
Magic references being Leaped into, although he doesn't mention Sam Beckett or Richard Martinez's names.

Songs & Music:
"I Only Have Eyes For You" by Kay Starr plays in the car as Ben and Addison drive to see Carrie

"It's Been So Long" by Helen Forrest plays in the diner

"How High The Moon" by The O'Neill Brothers Group plays as Ben goes back to the diner and talks to Hannah. It plays again when he returns at the end of the episode.

Say What?
The PQL team was dismantled a year prior to this episode and Magic even states in episode 202  "Ben and Teller" that he is no longer a government employee. However, they are suddenly back in their positions as if they never left.

Addison is surprised to find out that the sheriff is Carrie's grandfather, but within a second of seeing Russell Hunt, she tells Ben who he is. Information seems readily accessible for some people and scarce for others.

Morgan says that the police are on the way now to arrest Carrie and they they are running from that. However, he leaves the trunk open with a couple of suitcases showing, revealing his plan to whoever passes by.

Hannah and Carrie hide out in Ben's hotel room to avoid arrest. However, Hunt's men definitely know who Ben is and where he is staying while in town, so wouldn't this be one of the worst places to hide?

Magic keeps telling Adison to stop Ben from going through with his dangerous plan. We know the Imaging Chamber will work with two people, so why doesn't he join her to plead his case?

Personal Review & Detailed Synopsis by Brian Greene:

The episode opens without a saga-sell or recap and goes straight into the Leap. Ben faces a man on a farm who tells him that "they" have abducted three of his cows. As Ben checks his wallet ID for a photo of his host and other info, he discovers he is a federal agent named Robert Cook working for Project Sign, which investigates UFOs. The wind blows and they see a light on the hill above. The farmer says that it means they've landed. Ben investigates and discovers teenagers playing a prank with garden gnomes.

Ben gets in his car as Addison appears in an interesting fade-in from a wide angle inside the vehicle. She awkwardly asks him how it's going. He says he's an agent on Project Sign, but instead of UFOs he has seen garden gnomes. He tells her it reminded him of the Halloween where they dressed up... but then falls silent. She asks if he wants to talk about what has happened. Ben asks if she's with someone else. She tells him it's been about eight months with Tom. She says she'll tell Ben anything he wants to know, whatever i easiest for him. He says maybe they should just focus on the Leap for now. Addison says Ziggy doesn't yet know why he's there, but Ben finds a report detailing a UFO running two girls off the road in Starlight, New Mexico. It's 300 miles away from the farm he arrived on, so Ben and Addison drive on.

At PQL, Ian is excited at the possibility of seeing evidence of an alien UFO. Jenn is skeptical but Magic says he's a believer. "Being Leaped into changes one's perspective on life's possibilities." Jenn and Ian peruse a newspaper article detailing Carrie Baker and Melanie Hunt in a vehicle accident leaving Melanie in a coma and later dying and Carrie being charged with manslaughter as the driver of the vehicle.

Ben and Addison travel in the car awkwardly. Ben says it's his first road trip since he started Leaping. Addison says it's a cool car. Ben says he pretty much remembers everyone now and it all came back to him. They arrive in Starlight, New Mexico at St. Sebastian's hospital where Ben speaks with Carrie. Carrie says she was riding with  her best friend Melanie. She says the radio started making noise and the next thing they knew, the sky lit up.  Something passed over and Carrie tried to outrun what she thought might be a tornado. She says the hit a tree and the ship was hovering. She fell into a ravine where she hid until morning. She doesn't know what happened to Melanie.

The sheriff of Starlight enters the room and we find out he is Carrie's grandfather. There is tension between them and Sheriff Morgan says Carrie can't see Melanie right now because it's considered a criminal matter. The sheriff asks Ben to accompany him outside the room. He explains that Carrie lost her mother a year ago and hasn't been the same since  - he's had to clean up her messes along the way.

A nicely dressed man enters the hallway and demands to know why Carrie isn't locked up for causing the accident. Addison tells Ben that he is Melanie's father and owns half the town. Sheriff says she hasn't been released from hospital yet and Hunt demands that she be in lock-up by the end of the day. Morgan tells Ben he hopes he can find something to exonerate Carrie otherwise he's about to lose the last family he has. Ben says to himself, "So all I have to do is prove aliens are real."

Ben sits down in a diner and tells the waitress that he wants coffee after seeing his host reflection in a napkin dispenser. The waitress, Hannah, asks if he's heading out with the sheriff. She explains she knows about the situation from also working at the nearby hotel and saw Ben check in. Ben asks Hannah is she believes Carries story, and Hannah replies yes. Hannah says she believes all sorts of things are possible and uses the example of trying to explain a yo-yo to someone who has never seen one. She quotes a few scientific terms leaving Ben with a puzzled look on his face as to how she knew them, and is then interrupted by the sheriff. Hannah gives Ben the coffee on the house and he and the sheriff head out to the crash site.

Morgan and Ben speak in the car and although he is a hardened man, it's apparent that he loves his family and Carrie is all he has left. Ben notices a car following them and the sheriff guesses it's Hunt's men. Morgan whips the car around facing Hunt's men. They play chicken with the cars rushing at each other, but Hunt's men swerve off the road and Ben and the lawman continue on their trip. Ben discovers that the sheriff is the one who called Project Sign, prompting his arrival. At the vehicle crash site, Addison helps them find a partial print of a third person at the scene.

At the hospital, Ben and Addison find Carrie in Melanie's room reading to her. Ben says she shouldn't be in there for fear that Melanie's father might catch her. Ben tells Carrie that they need to find out who's really responsible for the accident. Ben tells Carrie about the third set of footprints. In a flashback, we see Carrie walking through the woods and discovering a figure with three green glowing eyes.

As Ben and Addison exit the hospital, Hunt's men are waiting. Ben goes to face them and they attack Ben. Morgan fires his rifle into the air shouting "He got your message... have you gotten mine?" Hunt's men leave in a hurry.

At PQL, Jenn, Addison, Magic and Ian discuss the Leap. Hunts money came from oil, but the oil dries up in 1946, three years prior to this Leap. Jenn guesses it could be drug money. Magic surmises that a helicopter might fit Carrie's story and look like a spaceship in 1949. Addison says it would make sense for Hunt to have one if he was running drugs. Jenn says the first civilian licensed helicopter was sold in 1946, matching the time frame they were discussing. Ian is disappointed that he may not get to see aliens. Magic confronts Addison about Ben's recklessness approaching Hunt's men. Magic asks if it would help sending someone else in. Addison says that Ben believes she abandoned him once and doesn't think it's a good idea to do it now.

Ben goes to the sheriff and asks him if Hunt might have a helicopter. They ride out together to Hunt's ranch to investigate. On the car ride, Addison tags along from the back seat. Ben compares Morgan's situation losing his daughter to that of his lost relationship with Addison and the anger it causes even though it is no one's fault. Suddenly, an unidentified aircraft approaches above their vehicle. The radio begins to squeal and then falls silent.

Addison says she can't hear the radio. Then realizes Ben can't hear her anymore. He image fades and she exits the Imaging Chamber asking what happened. She asks Ian if this could be Janis again and Ian informs her that Janis now works for the NSA in Hawaii and that the interference is not coming from their side. Ian smiles as they are again hopeful for UFO activity.

Sheriff Morgan stops the vehicle as a craft hovers above them! Morgan fires several rounds at the craft above and Ben runs off into the woods. He trips and when he looks up, he screams at an unknown sight near him. Ben wakes up in his hotel bed with Addison waking him. She tells Ben she is there to support him but that he keeps making rash decisions that he wouldn't have made three years ago. Ben yells, "You mean three days ago!" reminding her that time has been much different to him. Ben says he needs to help the sheriff and his granddaughter.

Ben is waved into the diner again by Hannah, who says she saw the sheriff carry Ben into the hotel. She asks if his neck is sore and they discover a large set of two puncture holes on his right side. Ben heads to the hospital and he and the sheriff examine Melanie, discovering the same puncture marks. Ben does a blood test to see what kind of drugs show up in his bloodstream. Sheriff says it wasn't a helicopter that approached them last night. Carrie gets discharged from the hospital and hugs Ben for his help. Ben says to thank her grandfather, the person who called him to help. Carries comments to her grandfather that she thought he didn't believe in UFOs. Sheriff replies, "I don't. But I believe in my granddaughter." They smile and Morgan escorts Carrie out before Hunt sees them and demands her locked up.

The PQL team go over the results of Ben's blood test from 1949 records. Magic recognizes the drug as military grade and says that there is a serum that can reverse its' effects. Magic says there is no military installation within 500 miles. Ian suggests there may be a black box program operating on private land. Addison guesses that it is how Hunt is making his money... it's not drugs, but Hunt is leasing his land to the military. They try to narrow down where this secret base could be located.

Ben and Addison suggest that the military drugged Malanie and put her back in the car, but they couldn't find Carrie. Addison says they found the name of a General that could have been in charge of what they are looking for. They approach the sheriff's home as he is packing bags to leave town with Carrie. He says Hunt got him suspended for impeding an investigation and moved up Carrie's court date. Sheriff says there's no way he's going to let them lock up his granddaughter. Ziggy says if they run away, history will change with Carrie still being convicted of manslaughter, but Sheriff Morgan going to prison as well. Ben asks Morgan for six hours to prove there is a military base on Hunt's land. Morgan tells him that there was construction on a mine a few years back on Hunt's land but it never made sense to resurrect and old mine from the 1800's. They agree to check it out.

At Ben's hotel, Addison tells Ben that if he gets drugged again after going out to look for the secret base, he could die. Ben shows her an injection of adrenaline he swiped from the hospital earlier. He intends to take the injection to keep his heart rate up, avoiding a coma like Melanie. Hannah and Carrie enter the room and Ben reveals that they are going to be safe there until he can get the evidence needed.

Jenn asks Ian what happens if you overdose on adrenaline, as they watch Ben on the Imaging Chamber monitor. They reply, "Too much and you could die. Too little and it won't be enough to counter the effects of the drug." Magic says that means he will go into a coma. He says to Addison through the system that she needs to stop Ben from going through with this crazy plan.

Ben become aggravated with Addison as she tries to convince him to just go talk to Hunt. They arrive at the gate to what they believe is the base and Ben shoots the adrenaline into his leg. Addison screams at him as he jumps over the fence, "I already buried you once! Please do not make me bury you again." Ben snaps back, "No one made you do that! No one made you bury me after two years, but you did! And now, I have to live with whatever that means for the rest of my life... whatever kind of life this is. Now I'm doing this, and if you are not with me as my hologram, this will not work. So please, don't give up on me. Again."

He walks off into the woods and Addison appears next to him. He says, "Thank you." Just after, a figure with three green glowing eyes approaches and Ben screams. Ben is taken on a wheeled cart through a facility and can barely stay awake. Everything is blurry.

In the morning, we see a military vehicle and three personnel drop Ben's body in the grass and drive off. Addison fades in next to him as the Morgan arrives. Ben asks as he wakes slowly, "Did it work?" Addison says, "It worked. I saw everything."

Later as Ben, Addison and Morgan wait outside the secret base, General
Austin Murray arrives in civilian clothes in his vehicle. Ben says he knows what is going on there on Hunt's property and the General denies it. Morgan tells Murray that he took photographs of the military guys grabbing Ben and some even better ones of him being dumped that morning. Ben says he saw everything, the camouflage sentries with their prototype 3 night vision goggles, the zero-point jet they are testing, and even heard the doctors laughing about their golf game as they injected him with Gamma Blue-5, the same drug that put Melanie Hunt in a coma. Addison says she saw a lot more that Congress probably doesn't know about. Ben tells Murray they want a dose of the syrup to reverse the effects of the drug given to Melanie, and a statement to Hunt that a helicopter flew too low and caused Carrie to crash. Morgan chimes in saying they will give a full scholarship to Carrie for the college of her choice and to throw in a car like Murray's... a new one.

Murray asks, "Anything else?" Ben replies, "I assume we aren't the first people from Starlight you've abducted. But we are the last. Morgan tells him to move his base and leave the good folks of his county alone. Murray nods affirmatively. Ben tells him there is an abandoned airfield in Groom Lake,  Nevada and he should check it out. Ben directs, "I believe it's called Area 51." Addison smiles.

Sheriff Morgan tells Ben he doesn't know how best to thank him. Ben tells him to talk to Carrie about how he feels. About what they've been through and what they lost. Addison knows Ben is also talking about her and Ben's situation.
"It's the hardest thing in the world. But it's the only way forward." She fades out.

Magic trims his Bonsai tree in his PQL office. Addison enters and says it felt like they almost lost Ben again today. Magic tells her all the agony and loss they went through doesn't vanish just because Ben's alive. They still carry all three years of it. Addison says she doesn't know how to help Ben anymore. "It's so strange to look at Ben... my Ben... and not know what to do." Magic tells her to give it time. She agrees. Magic asks if Tom is back from D.C. and tells her that no one should go through this without help. She exits and he makes a phone call telling someone that this is all a lot harder than he thought.

Ben visits the diner again and speaks again with the waitress, Hannah. Ben thanks her for the help. He quotes part of the theory of relativity, and Hannah completes the wording! Ben asks what kind of waitress knows it. Hannah says she grew up wanting to be a scientist. She
says she studied mathematics and physics. She got a job during the war as a programmer on the first electro mechanical computer. The job went away after the war like it did for most women. Ben gives her the name of a professor, Yates, at Princeton who is about to open up a new physics program to female candidates. Ben tells her to contact him and to go live the life she wants to live. He says goodbye. She says "Oh no, don't say goodbye. It's so final. Just say 'see you later.' That leaves an open door."
Ben replies, "See you later." He Leaps.
As Ben arrives in his next Leap, he is faced with a man explaining a plan to steal a statue and ensure no survivors!

A solid episode with a great story of mystery! Sheriff Morgan's character really stood out in the episode. Very believable with several twists and turns. The imagery of the three green eyes early in the episode immediately let me know it was not aliens, so that should have been more blurred in the beginning to protect the secret. I had a hard time with Addison's attitude about Ben and their relationship. It's hard to remember it has been three years for her without him at times, making it difficult to like her. The tension is the obvious goal of the writers here, but I really miss Addison and Ben together now, despite thinking at the beginning of last season that they should have not made them romantically involved. They grew on me! Will they go back together again? Looking forward to the next episode to find out how Hannah will reappear as an announced series regular! I have a feeling Ben has created a butterfly effect in her when he changed her history as he gave her the contact info for the professor at Princeton.
