In an early draft, titled Dreaming a Life Away, Hilla's diary is extended at the start as she explains "It's Christmas, but I can't get in the spirit of things or have the same feeling I did growing up. I think about Peter, Hans, Mama and Papa and can only cry."

The script is otherwise almost identical.
