"The Leap Between the States"
|
Cut Scenes: The first version of the script, dated February 4th 1993, gives Sam more lines during the teaser (such as "a movie. It's gotta be a movie."). It describes the leap in as "blue Quantum fire". In the opening of Act One Sam has a monologue explaining the rules of leaping, and where he thinks he is - all of which is likely obvious to most viewers. Sam reads some of the letter just as the soldier he tends to dies, then Montgomery and his soldier have some extra lines as they chase after him (the letter reading happens at this point in the finished episode). Private Ryder's non-speaking companion is named Private Callahan. We see Isaac and his friends rescuing Sam (Sam also details his rescue a bit more when talking to Al). Al says specifically that they lost track of Sam after he leaped out of Mallard Prison, placing this straight after Revenge of the Evil Leaper. Al compares Olivia to Florence Nightingale, and compares Sam to Romeo (not Rhett, per the finished episode). Al also says of the potential time paradox that "this stuff gives me a headache. It's like the Terminator movies" (at this point, there in the franchise, the first of which centred around a plot to prevent someone's birth by killing their mother in the past), later also referred to in Judgment Day. The rest of the script is then mostly identical until Montgomery catches Isaac - at this point, in the finished episode Sam pretends to have found Isaac himself, while in the script Sam makes Isaac pretend that he's uncovered Sam's secret mission as a spy. The entire fourth act then plays out completely differently, as Sam is taken prisoner. Olivia distracts the soldiers and rescues him, and Sam convince her to escape with him (Al gives a 97% chance that he could end up hanging if caught). Sam and Olivia split up, and Montgomery finds Olivia, who claims that Sam overpowered her - he doesn't believe her though, accusing her of giving "shelter and succor to an enemy of the Confederacy, and God knows what else you gave him." Al catches up with Sam, giving him 68% odds that he's in the clear, but that Olivia is in trouble, so he goes back to find her. Olivia has been shackled up but has the spare set in her bodice - Sam offers to fish them out but Olivia refuses, stating "don't tell me that in the future respectable women won't care who reaches down their blouses!" Montgomery finds them, as Al gives him 4% odds, which drops to 2% and then... Isaac rescues them by holding Montgomery at gunpoint. |
