Cut Scenes: In the second version of the script, dated 3rd October 1989, there are several uses of the word 'n*gger' (for example by the Judge) to establish the antagonistic setting (even Sam says "men just call her 'n*gger bitch'"'). Al gently accuses Sam of being attracted to Delilah and he has a brief argument with the handlink about Sam's ability to prove Lila innocent. Sam and Myrtle have some extra establishing chat where she offers him some mint tea. Sam starts to panic that Lila will die due to his mistake and asks God for help. Much more is made of the African-American crowd at the back of the courtroom (in particular a roar of laughter when Sam accepts the white jurors are Lila's equals). The montage of questioning is not specifically scripted (even though we hear words in the final episode). A local gossip notices Sam and Al talking and observes that "that coloured whore's got Leonard talkin' to himself". A little later Al suggests of Sugee "your Mama should have practiced safe sex." Lila pleads aloud for Sadie not to confess. |
