12/15/2002Rodvision The Quantum Cancellation Through Quantum Leap’s final season, Sam leapt into some pretty famous people. Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and Lee Harvey Oswald to name a few of them. From what The Rod has read, it would appear that Universal had put pressure on Donald Bellisario to incorporate celebrities such as these, into Sam’s leaps. Why? When Quantum Leap was garnering a large ratings figure. You also have to know that Universal knew that Quantum Leap had this amount of ratings. Especially when the aforementioned show has a lot of viewers, not just in the US, but also worldwide. Personally, The Rod did enjoy the celebrity leaps, Lee Harvey Oswald was a very dramatic and nail biting episode. In spite of this, perhaps there was a hidden agenda to suggesting these celebrity leaps, perhaps Universal thought that Quantum Leap couldn’t handle the responsibility of dealing with real life histories, instead of fictional ones. The Rod had a long think about this whole thing, and concluded that maybe Universal WANTED Quantum Leap to fail with the Celebrity Leaps. Maybe they hoped that these failures could be the reason to axe the show. However, from The Rod’s reading, it appears as though MOST leapers enjoyed these episodes as well. Merchandise Another theory behind Quantum Leap’s cancellation is that there wasn’t enough merchandising opportunity for Quantum Leap. When The Rod was a little rod, He collected the Transformer toys. He loved watching the cartoon, and was delighted to discover that He could actually BUY toys/books/clothing of His heroes. The Little Rod also had a few Knight Rider toys and clothing. The Rod doesn’t recall ever seeing toys of Quantum Leap, or even large stocks of Quantum Leap clothing, even though He knows it can STILL be purchased. Any major TV show usually has a fair amount of merchandise in the form of clothing/toys. Why didn’t Quantum Leap? Movie Spin Offs Perhaps Universal wished to try and escalate Quantum Leap to the big screen, and discovered they could not (For whatever reason) and decided to axe the show as a result. As The Rod is NOT Donald P Bellisario, perhaps He will never know the real reason behind the cancellation of Quantum Leap. Universal will have an official reason; you can bet your life it’s not their REAL reason!
