Cut Scenes: In the first draft script, dated 9th September 1991, the McBain family are called the O'Donoghues. Al spent time with Katie in the Waiting Room after the leap in (it's Verbeena in the broadcast version). Al's line about "sometimes a girl says no and she really means yes" appears to be said without tore to irony, with him pushing more to give Kevin - who runs a liquor store in this draft - the benefit of the doubt later too. At the end of the same discussion the broadcast version fades out quickly, perhaps cutting off the scripted conclusion where Al says "Look Sam, you don't have any choice. If you don't do something, Katie's life won't get any better. She sees a shrink but doesn't recover. In four months she commits suicide". In the restaurant, the confrontation with Kevin's friends very nearly turns violent. There is no discussion in the ladies room between Sam and Al, but the following scene with Nancy runs for longer, with a few extra notes such as Sam pointing out that "I've already been humiliated... by my family... and the newspaper... and Kevin's pals". Although no lines are changed, Paula is definitely lying when she says Kevin didn't hit her, and Nancy knows this, and Nancy also pressures Kevin more to admit that the rape was premeditated. Kevin's examination ends with him explaining "I shouldn't of had sex with her. I knew she was unhappy. I made a mistake. But that's no reason to send me to jail". Sam and Al don't discuss the time they brought Verbeena into the Imaging Chamber, and instead act as if Katie will be the first one to try this - but Sam does think the detail might be in his original design files. Katie's testimony is harder to listen to: "He got very angry and told me I was acting like a child and started to pull at my dress again. I tried to talk but that made me cry even more. I kept telling him to stop. To take me home. I just wanted to go home. But he was so angry and it was like he didn't hear me. I tried to scream and he grabbed my throat and pushed me against the seat... and that's when he ripped my dress. He grabbed my breast... it hurt so much" - some of the story is then taken up by Sam, even though in the finished episode Bakula remains silent throughout. Kevin is convicted but released to prepare an appeal, which is when he attacks Sam. In the new future Katie becomes a D.A. This draft was used to prepare The Quantum Leap Book which replicates some of these oddities as if they were in the episode as broadcast. |
