Detailed Synopsis: As the episode opens, Magic explains to Jenn that he wasn't forced to resign his position at PQL. He chose to do it to save the project. Jenn doesn't want to accept it, and asks Magic to stay for one last leap. He declines, "Not this time." The eye-roll leap-in is used to place Ben in a living room scene as a fire fighter. He sees himself in the mirror immediately as a young boy around 11 years old yells, "Don't just stand there. Put it out!" A small fire has broken out around the television set. The boy asks about a man laying on the floor. Ben checks on him and notes that he will be okay. The boy explains that they were testing his new circuit board and it started sparking and the man got electrocuted and passed out. Ben says it looks pretty advanced, and the boy comments, "How would you know?" Ben gets a call on his radio asking about the situation, and responds that they need medical assistance on floor 28. Ben tells the boy not to worry, "Your Dad's going to be okay." The boy tells him that it isn't his Dad, it's his neighbor. His Dad died a couple years ago when they lived in New Jersey. Ben asks about his mother as a woman rushes in. The woman calls the boy Jeffrey. Ben recognizes her voice as Hannah! She comes over to Ben and he whispers, "Hannah." She knows it's Ben and they share a moment. Hannah explains that she works in D.C. now in physics, but things have been tough. Ben suggests investing in Bristol Myers Squibb, Apple, and Facebook as they come along could help. She tells Ben that she isn't going to do that, and that it has to be against the rules. Ben says he heard about Josh and says he's so sorry. Hannah says it's not his fault, he tried, and she loves him for that. As Hannah walks down the hall to check on Jeffrey, Addison appears and informs Ben that Magic has resigned. She summarizes the story of Ian cutting a deal with Gideon Rydge to make th Quantum chip that allowed them to find Ben after the project was shut down. The Pentagon found out and they almost pulled the entire team. Addison sees Hannah and notes that she's here as well. Ben says if Ziggy has any more bad news, he will pass. Addison says Ziggy predicts the leap is not about Hannah and that his host name is Captain Otis Burton, a husband and father who has worked for the Baltimore Fire Department for 20 years prior to his retirement in about a month. Ziggy says there is a 74% chance the fire was an isolated incident and Ben is there for some other reason, possibly to save someone else. Addison says she will go find out what that reason is and heads back to the Control Room. Jenn, Ian, and Addison watch as Magic packs the last of his things. Jenn says she's been ordered to deactivate Magic's access code and key. As Magic approaches them, Ian says it should have been themself that was fired. Magic says, "No, this project needs you. Ben needs you." He tells Ian to use the time bought and finish the DARPA equation and bring Ben home. Ian says, "Yes, sir." Magic has appointed Jenn as interim head to handle the day-to-day operations. Jenn is skeptical that the government will trust an ex-con to lead Quantum Leap, but Magic says for now they will and he is proud of her and the rest of the team. They all embrace Magic and he heads out. "The future of Quantum Leap is in your hands now." Ben tells Hannah that it's been three leaps and he wasn't sure if he'd ever see her again. She replies, "When you said next leap maybe it should be the two of us sitting by a fire, this wasn't exactly the fireplace I had in mind." Ben laughs and says they think the fire is an isolated incident and she is safe with him. "I'm always safe with you," she replies. Hannah asks Ben if she looks old. He shakes his head, "You look the same every time I see you. Beautiful." Hannah says things have been challenging since Josh died, but because of Ben, she has been dabbling in theoretical physics. "Our meetings are fixed points in space-time, which can be used as the basis for all sorts of extrapolations." She adds that no matter how many different ways she looks at Ben's path, there's only one constant. "This is the last time we cross, Ben. And we're never going to see each other again." Outside the window, flames rise up. "So much for an isolated incident." Jeffrey rushes in and asks if that was an explosion. Addison arrives and says a transformer blew eight floors below. As Ben heads out to investigate, Addison teaches, "The Excelsior" was supposed to be the crown jewel of the Baltimore skyscraper boom in the 70's." However, the use of cheap aluminum wiring has caused this disaster. She tells him to advise Chief Garcia that they should use the west stairwell to access the building. Ben asks Hannah and Jeffrey to evacuate the building while he helps get some other people out on the floors above. Jeffrey asks to go and get his Dad's stuff, but Ben says he will try to get it once everyone is safe. As they head down the stairwell, Jeffrey asks how Ben knows his Mom's name. Hannah rescues the situation by saying it's not the first time the fire department has been to the building. Ben leaves to head for the construction workers, and Hannah asks to help. Ben declines, and says she should be heading away from the danger because she's not a fire fighter. She quips, "Neither are you!" She adds that every time they have crossed paths, it's because he needed her help. Addison agrees. Ben says, "Don't leave my side," to which Hannah replies, "Wouldn't dream of it." Ben busts down the door where the construction workers are. He orders them out, but an explosion blocks the hallway. Addison says they will have to go through the fire to get to the west stairwell. They find some gypsum boards, which are fire resistant and prepare to exit, but Addison's holographic image begins to glitch as she's disconnected from the Imaging Chamber. Addison exits the IC and Jenn explains that Ian needed more power to crack the DARPA code, and she needs a few moments to redirect power to get back online. As they screw handles to the boards to use as fire shields, Hannah tells been she's thought a lot about what he told her in Cairo, about how Ben leaped to save Addison. She says she knows what it's like to lose someone you love, "only you haven't lost her." She tells him to look at it from a cosmic perspective. He's still connected to Addison and everyone he's ever loved because, "love is timeless." We get a short flashback of Ben bumping into Addison at the project in 2018, as seen last season. The Ben asks if everyone is ready to push through the fire. Jenn figures out the power issue and tells Addison that she hopes the government doesn't assign someone to be in charge that doesn't have the same connection that they do. "Because this is our house." Addison heads back to the Imaging Chamber with, "Yeah. It is." Ben, Hannah, and the workers use the gypsum boards to press through the fire in an impressive scene with great real fire effects. A missed opportunity in having Addison walk through the fire as a hologram, she appears only after they make it through to the safe hallway. However, Hannah has inhaled too much smoke and Ben gives her an oxygen mask to recoup. Hannah says it's not easy keeping up with Ben anymore. Since Hannah and Ben first met, it's been 9 leaps for him, but 9,131 1/4 days. "But who's counting?" Hannah says she thinks there is a reason the Accelerator brought them together. New Mexico, Cairo, Princeton, her home... a larger purpose than just the two of them. An eruption occurs somewhere inside the building and Addison tells Ben that Jeffrey is missing. Hannah hears Ben say that Jeffery is missing and guesses that he went back to the apartment for Josh's things. Ian pours over the DARPA code. "It tasks me and I shall have it. I'll chase it 'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares Maelstrom and--" Jenn asks, "Did you just quote Moby Dick to that equation?" Ian replies, "No, Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan." The programmer says they are having a hard time with the code. Jenn comments, "Math's just not mathin', huh?"Ian explains, "Most equations are like sentences... but this is a masterpiece." The code is displayed on the screen in the office. "Elegantly constructed by someone who has a deep and enlightened understanding of the laws of physics. This is to time-travel what Michaelangelo's David was to art. If only the powers that be hadn't redacted that old DARPA file then I might e able to figure pout which scientist wrote it and what their methodology was." Ian then suggests that Jenn, with her new powers at Quantum Leap, could get the documents unredacted. Jenn says she has already tried, but aside from hacking in herself, she can't because there are eyes on her at all times. She adds, "We are not losing Quantum Leap. Not on my watch." Addison goes to find Jeffrey as Hannah details tat her son has become resentful towards her when moving them after Josh died. She says he blames her for his father's death. As they head up the stairs to get Jeffrey, there is another explosion and they are thrown back, pinning Hannah under debris. She begs Ben to save her son and leave her there. Ben says, "Addison's going to watch over you while I'm gone." Hannah replies, "Then I know I'm in good hands. Hey, don't say goodbye. Say, see you later." Ben exits to save Jeffrey and Hannah tells Addison there is something her team needs to see. She begins writing an equation with her finger in the dirt. Jeffrey, in the apartment, picks up some of his father's things and finds the letter written by Ben, warning Hannah about Josh's heart condition. He doesn't open it, but sticks it in his back pocket as Ben rushes in to get him. Jeffrey asks where his Mom is and tells Ben that he acts like he knows her, but he doesn't. Ben tells the boy that he knows what it's like to lose a Dad. Ben says that the only way to move past the rage and hurt from losing someone is to move forward. Jeffrey finally agrees to leave with Ben, and as he picks up the box of his father's belongings, a folder with "DARPA" printed on the cover is revealed on the table. Ian and Jenn watch as Hannah finishes her equation from the observer screen. They realize that the code was written by Hannah! "We can bring Ben home!" Hannah speaks to Addison, hoping the Observer is seeing and hearing what she says. "I kept thinking time was like a river, with everything flowing through it. But I was wrong. Some things don't move. Because they are... timeless." She hopes Addison's team can make the equation work with the technology they have in the future. Addison asks what it is. Hannah, seemingly responding, says, "It's a means of triggering a temporal realignment." Addison realizes it is Hannah who wrote the DARPA code. Hannah says she is glad that she could finish it before it was too late." Hannah becomes weak and Addison becomes nervous she may die. Hannah says through labored breath, "Addison, there are all kinds of bonds holding the universe together. And while nothing lasts forever, there are some bonds that can't be broken. And no matter how far apart they're driven, they always come back together, like it was fate." We see a flashback of Ben and Addison from "July 13, 1985" (the pilot episode) as Ben explains the Law of Entanglement. Addison realizes, "A Quantum Entanglement." Ben and Jeffrey become trapped in the apartment and have to escape out the window, over 20 floors up. Ben climbs out on the ledge. Jenn repeats, "So when the code is programmed into the Quantum Accelerator..." Ian continues, "...Ben will be disconnected from his fixed point in the past and reconnected to a fixed point in the present. Theoretically." Jenn asks, "What do you mean, theoretically? She finished it!" Ian advises, "She may have finished the code but I still need to figure out how to make it work." Jenn exclaims, "Type it in and hit enter!" Ian pauses and says, "How do I explain this? You know how Hannah said that time is like a river which just keeps on flowing? Any attempt to reposition Ben could result in him getting swept away by the current forever. We need to find a constant for him to latch on to." After realizing he won't get far on the ledge because of the growing fire, Ben swings down to the next floor. Jeffrey is too afraid. Ben says, "Jeffrey, courage is a choice! So forget the fear. Choose courage." This is the same advice that Josh gave younger Jeffrey in "Off The Cuff." Jeffrey jumps and Ben catches him, pulling the boy to safety. "Let's go save your Mom!" In a dramatic sequence, Ben pulls Hannah from the loosened debris and carries her away from the fire. Jeffrey and Hannah are reunited and relieved. Jeffrey then asks Ben, "You never met my Dad. How did you know what to say to me?" The Fire Chief interrupts and Jeffrey goes to sit on the sidewalk alone. Addison shows up and reports to Ben that his host retires happily in a month, but not before reporting the building developers to the building commission. Addison asks Ben to tell Hannah she said goodbye, and thanks, and that Hannah will know what for. Addison exits the Imaging Chamber and asks where they are on Hannah's equation. Jenn informs her that Ian has cracked it. Ian says they have one additional variable to figure out: how to safely disconnect Ben from the past and reconnect him in the present. Ian adds, "The only way that this is going to work is if Ben swaps places with another person." Suddenly, military personnel enter the Control Room and tell them to step away from the computer terminals and desist all activities. Addison asks, "On whose authority?" Gideon Rydge enters answering, "You could say it's on the Pentagon's authority, or head of congressional oversight, but if we're being honest they just kinda do what I tell them, so let's say it's on my authority. Because from now on, I'm in charge of Quantum Leap." Ben tells Hannah, "Just FYI, there's this movie about a burning building that's coming out later this year that might be a little triggering." Hannah smiles, "I prefer rom-coms anyway. But I must admit, that was one hell of a last hurrah. Really went out in a blaze of glory, huh?" Ben replies, "Too soon." Ben hopes that this is the start of a healing process between her and Jeffrey. The boy opens the letter from Ben he sent to Hannah during "The Family Treasure" and begins to read it as Hannah tells Ben that she has a job offer in California and will probably take it. Hannah, during a flashback compilation of scenes from previous episodes, says to Ben, "In our brief time together, you have changed my whole world. The doors you opened, the adventures we shared, the possible experiences I never would have had if you hadn't walked into that diner all those years ago. That was the greatest gift. And I wanted to give you something in return. Today I realized how to make that a reality. I've been working on a Quantum code for DARPA. A code that will get you home, Ben. Where you belong." Ben leaps as they embrace. Jeffrey finishes reading the letter signed "All my love, Ben" and looks up to see his Mom asking, "Ben?" of the firefighter in front of her who appears confused. Otis Burton asks, "Who's Ben? How did I get here?" She replies as Jeffrey looks on, "Easy Captain, you've hit your head and lost consciousness. Let's get you some help." Jeffrey now realizes what is happening. Gideon's subordinate, Alicia, advises the Quantum Leap team that the project is undergoing significant restructuring and Gideon Rydge is their new project director. Gideon then tells the trio that they can check with the Pentagon, but he needs them to turn over their access badges as their positions have been terminated. Jenn says, "You can't do that." Gideon advises, "If I had a nickel for every time I'd heard that phrase, I'd be a billionaire. Again." Ian begs Gideon to let them use the swap code to bring Ben back. Gideon replies, "You're fired, Ian. You should have played ball sooner." Addison attempts to disarm the nearest guard and succeeds, but there are too many other guards to win the battle. Addison warns, "Ben is still out there, and I am not going to leave him behind." Gideon says that his team will take good care of Dr. Song but for their own safety, they need to turn over their badges and walk away. Jenn suggests they leave peacefully. Addison, Ian and Jenn drop their badges on the floor and exit through the elevator as Gideon says, "I wish you all the very best." |

Personal Review by Brian Greene: I loved this episode! Plenty of action and heart. I liked how the leap was about Hannah and her son, struggling with the death of his father. It tied the PQL storyline together well with the leap this time. The acting was very good. I did find Ben's attitude with the construction worker at first to be out of character. I've missed the Addison and Ben romance, although I would have been happy if Hannah had stayed a bit longer. But I'm glad the love triangles are over. I'm so happy Hannah didn't die! And she wrote the DARPA code! The special effects were well done! The pyrotechnics were amazing and the film style worked. Plenty of nice hologram effects, except we still aren't getting Addison to walk through anything! A lot of great work was put into this, I can tell! Gideon is back in full force! A bit over-the-top, but a fun villain. Enjoyed his backup team being extra threatening as well. I suspect that Gideon is Jeffrey Nally. Jeffrey reading that letter from Ben, knowing something is off... Excellent writing and storytelling, awesome SFX, good heart story and the beginning of the end for this season! I hope Magic isn't gone for good... Click here for Part II of the Season Two finale, "Against Time." |

Say
What? Noticeably absent from Magic's box of belongings he carries from his former office is the Bonsai tree he has been seen pruning since season one. At first, Ziggy doesn't seem to know that the upcoming fire was going to kill Ben's host and four construction workers in the building. Then moments later, all the sudden Ziggy knows what happened in the original history. This should have been simple knowledge to the supercomputer. As Ben tells everyone to move as calmly and as quickly as possible, Addison is motioning for everyone to come her way, but why? They can't see her! Ben's back is to Addison, so he can't see her either. It is unlikely a woman in 1974 on a big-city fire department would be a career firefighter as could be assumed from the depiction in the episode by Emmie Nagata as Lieutenant Wharton. From wsfi.com: As far as we currently know, the first woman to be paid for fighting fires was Sandra Forcier, who was hired as a Public Safety Officer -- a combination police officer and firefighter -- by the City of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on July 1, 1973. Forcier moved into a fire-only position four years later. Battalion Chief Sandra (Forcier) Waldron retired from Winston-Salem in 2004. Judith Livers (now Judith Brewer) was hired as a firefighter by the Arlington County, Virginia, Fire Department in 1974, becoming the first woman ever hired into a strictly firefighing position. Helping her firefighter husband study for his fire science classes, Livers learned about the devastation fire can cause, and was motivated to become a firefighter herself. She retired from Arlington County in late1999, at the rank of battalion chief. Ben knocks on the door where the construction workers are for about four seconds. He then busts open the door in about three more seconds and very angrily tells them that when someone knocks on the door, you answer it. It seemed out of character for him, plus it was only seven total seconds from his last knock to entering the room by force. Ben chops a small hole in the door, but seemingly for no reason, as he forces the door open with his body instead of reaching through the hole to unlock the door. Ben is screwing a handle to the gypsum board so slowly it made me nervous. We've seen this before a few times in this series - an emergency situation - and the characters are having a nice monologue amongst themselves instead of rushing to fix a problem. When Hannah and Ben are talking before they go through the fiery hallway, a construction worker on the right side of the frame is obviously faking doing something with a screwdriver. It can definitely be seen that Ben is in a harness erased by CGI from his swinging movements on the ledge of the building. This was an impressive shot, though! |
