Scott Bakula as
John Samuel Beckett
- Sam's Father (1969)

Biography

Sam's father, John Samuel Beckett, is a recurring character in which Scott Bakula takes on dual roles in the two appearances he makes of John with son Sam Beckett on Quantum Leap. Newell Alexender appears as John in part two of the series pilot story arc "Genesis: Part 2".

John is a kind, hard-working, and honest man who never degrades or belittles his wife. He smoked, and claimed he was healthy because he worked hard, slept good, and ate plenty of dairy products. He worked on the dairy farm, sixteen hours a day, seven days a week. Despite his hard work, the farm was initially taken away from him. The sequence changes in one of Sam's leaps to his hometown in 1969.

Named after his grandfather John Beckett, who was a Union Army officer who served in the American Civil War, John was a dairy farmer and was married to Thelma Louise Beckett. John and wife Thelma are the parents of Sam, Tom and Katie. He died due to a fatal heart attack, mostly because he smoked too many cigarettes daily. In the episode The Leap Home, Part I, Sam tries to make his father stop smoking cigarettes but couldn't convince him to change his diet, start exercising and give the cigarettes up.

John, Sam's dad, again appears in the Season 5 episode Promised Land, as Sam, who leaped into William "Willie" Walters, Jr., an acquaintance of Sam whose family is acquainted with the Beckett family in Elk Ridge, IN in 1971, also, one of three brothers who are robbing the town bank in order to pay off a loan, runs into John beforehand, as he's headed from the bank, as he asks how Willie's family is doing, as Sam, who almost slipped and tried to introduce himself as his son before getting reminded by Al that his dad can only see he as his leapee Willie, as he then wishes John and his family a "Very Merry Christmas".

Rob Hyland as
Cpt. John Beckett
- Sam's Great-Grandfather (1862)

Biography

Captain John Beckett (played in cameo look-in-the mirror appearance by bit actor Rob Hyland), of the Union Army. In the Season 5 episode The Leap Between The States, Dr. Samuel Beckett, as his ancestor, Capt. Beckett, while helping the underground railroad smuggle a family to freedom in 1862 Virginia, must also win the heart of who turns out to be his future great-grandmother Olivia Barrett Covington (played by Kate McNeil), or he may be erased from existence.

The episode The Leap Between the States was one of only two episodes of the show where the perpetual time-traveler Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) leaped out of his lifetime, this time jumping into the American Civil War in 1862. Here he assumes the identity of John, his great-grandfather and must woo his great grandmother Olivia, deal with the slavery issue, protect the Covington servant/slave Issac King (played by Michael D. Roberts, and who in the storyline is the great grandfather of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.) and fend off a Confederate officer, Lt. Montgomery (Geoffrey Lower) who attempts to force himself on Olivia, against her wishes.

Kate McNeil as
Olivia Barrett Covington Beckett
- Sam's Great-Grandmother (1862)

Biography

Olivia Barrett Covington is Sam Beckett's great-grandmother, and a widowed Southern war bride and Northern sympathizer and helped escaped slaves reach the Union lines near link to The Underground Railroad. She appears in the episode of Quantum Leap titled The Leap Between the States in the fifth season of the series. The role of Olivia is played by actress Kate McNeil.

Olivia, while she was the owner and heiress of the family cotton plantation, where she also owned several slaves at the time the Civil War broke out, actually deplored slavery, and sympathized with the abolitionist cause. Even with this, she looked upon some of the Union soldiers that were pillaging the Virginia town where she lived as "filthy animals". Thus, Sam, who leaps into John Beckett, his great-grandfather, must win the heart of his great-grandmother Olivia, or he may be erased from existence. Sam leaps into John, his great grandfather, in order to help keep alive the sequences which bring about the relationship between John and the twice-widowed war bride Olivia, who wasn't very impressed with John upon their first meeting in her barn, as she says to him (or Sam as John, conversing with hologram Al) "Not only do I have to get a Union soldier, but a crazy one to boot!".

Sam, as John, also has to protect her and John from the wrath of a Conferderate officer, the lecherous Lieutenant Montgomery (Geoffrey Lower) who, in pursuit of John, a Union officer, wounds him in battle, as well as Covington servant slave Issac King, who was secretly, without Olivia's knowledge, was harboring escaped slaves and aiding them in a trek to the North via The Underground Railroad.

Yet, Olivia secretly sympathizes with the cause of escaped slaves who are trying to venture north via The Underground Railroad. Sam, as John, his grandfather, must try to keep intact the relationship which develops between John and Olivia, who, in the original storyline, was to fall in love with John and move North, marry, with Olivia eventually becoming Sam's great grandmother.
